Replacing LCD with Direct View Small Pitch LED digital signage for window display. We help retailers turn storefronts into high-impact digital experiences.Traditional LCD signage struggles under sunlight, wears out quickly, and limits visibility.
The pixel pitch is the center-to-center distance between two pixels, usually measured in millimeters. We state the pixel pitch with a ‘P’ and a number. If you have a 10mm pixel pitch, it means that the distance from the center of one pixel to the center of the adjacent pixel is 10 millimeters.
The lower the pixel pitch, the higher the resolution of the display screen, the more precise the image will appear to the viewer. It is important because it determines the display’s clarity and optimal viewing distance.
Indoor pixel pitches are mainly P1.25, P1.538, P1.86, P2, P2.5, P3, P3.91, P4, P4.81 and P5. Outdoor pixel pitches are mainly P2.5, P3, P3.91, P4, P4.81, P5, P6, P6.67, P8 and P10. Different applications ask for different pixel pitches.
Pixel pitch (distance between pixels) determines image quality. Smaller pixel pitch offers a sharper image but requires a closer viewing distance. Usually, the optimal viewing distance is 2 to 3 times the pixel pitch number in meters. For example:
The optimal viewing distance for a 2mm pixel pitch LED screen will be 4-6 meters, roughly 13.1 – 19.7ft.
10mm pixel pitch requires a minimum viewing distance of 20 meters for the best visual experience.
Here are some usual pixel pitch measurements for your reference.
Indoor screens generally use LED displays with pixel pitches in the range of 1.2mm to 4mm. Many indoor digital signage options have a resolution of 4mm or lower. In a retail store or office environment, a 2mm pixel pitch is generally considered optimal, as most viewers will be quite close to their screens.
Outdoor displays require higher brightness and weatherproof features (IP rating). Larger Pixel Pitch (5mm – 10mm+): Suitable for airport, stadiums, billboards, and other outdoor applications, where viewers are farther away. Bigger pixel pitch has higher brightness.
To display high-quality visuals, your LED wall needs to have a sufficient number of pixels. Text, animation, and video displays all have different size and resolution requirements.
Text-Heavy applications: Such as in exhibition and conference centers, smaller pitches (1.5mm to 2.5mm) ensure readability.
Video Content: A 3mm to 4mm pitch is suitable for indoor ads such as hotel, retail.
Simple Graphics: Larger pitches (5mm and up) are sufficient for displaying logos, images and videos for outdoor use.
Display size: Determine the ideal size and aspect ratio of the LED digital display based on the available space and viewing distance.
When creating content for a LED digital signage, the total number of pixels in the image must at least match the pixel count of the height and width of the sign. For optimal effect, images that load in the led sign should contain at least twice the number of pixels that the sign’s height and width.
For example, a sign with 48 x 96 pixels should feature an image composition of at least 96 x 192 pixels. You can use more pixels than that—especially with smaller sign sizes—to create a clearer, sharper image.
The smaller the pixel pitch of the LED display, the higher the manufacturing cost. Therefore, besides the viewing distance and resolution requirements, the cost factor should be considered comprehensively to choose the suitable pixel pitch and size with the highest cost performance.
The correct resolution and size option depends on the content you display, where your sign installs, and what your business needs out of your signage.
